Why Arabs Will Never Be. Ever. (2)

The Arab participation in the Summer Olympics goes back to the Stockholm Games of 1912. That summer, Egypt was the sole Arab participating country. Since then, more Arabs participated as more nations came to exist and the Olympics became the prestigious international athletic event. However, the increased presence in the games was never enough reason for Arabs to excel and win. For the sake of illustration, below is a table of all medals won by Arabs since, and including, 1912, but not including the current, 2008 Beijing games.

Gold Silver Bronze Total
Algeria 4 1 7 12
Djibouti 0 0 1 1
Egypt 7 7 9 23
Iraq 0 0 1 1
Kuwait 0 0 1 1
Lebanon 0 2 2 4
Morocco 6 4 9 19
Qatar 0 0 2 2
Saudi Arabia 0 1 1 2
Syria 1 1 1 3
Tunisia 1 2 3 6
UAE 1 0 0 1
Total 20 18 37 75

The medal count is of those that participated and won medals. (source)

For comparison purposes, throughout the history of the Olympic Games, New Zealand (a country of 4 Million) won 77 medals, Austria (8 Million) won 83, Greece (11 Million) won 104......

you get the point. Arabs suck ass (more on this phrase in a future post). you know, Arabs will probably lose at a "Who Sucks More" Competition.

If we win the 3 medals in ass sucking we'll total 78 and surpass New Zealand. I'm optimisitic

olympic games are biased anyway with all those snow associated games, there are like no legit desert sports!!!

On a side note, I'm Arab and coincidentally my cardiologist gave me clear instructions to not train for the olympics. I'm not sure why he thought there was a possibility I may wake up one day and decide to become a professional pole jumper or something....

hareega,
lol, that would be a good day for Arabs. But, for each medal arabs won there is 3Million in population, where New Zealand has about 55000. that is a stark contrast!

asoom,
what are you talking about? I did not include the winter Olympics in the count. Besides, the track and field has a huge number of medals to win. Also, prophet Mohammad encouraged teaching children swimming, horseback riding and archery. these three sections include a mountain of medals to win. swimming in all its 46 different variations, archery, fencing, shooting, wrestling....

You seem to be neglecting that between 1912 and the 1950s many Arab countries were under occupation, and were fighting for liberation. Even after the 1950, there were many wars in the region, and that ate away the infrastructure. After all, you won't have time to train for the olympics if your economy is crippled and you are trying to survive all the wars.

In compairson, Austria and Greece were not involved in a major armed conflict after World War 2, and i don't even recall that New Zealand ever was in a war. So, it really is an unfair comparison.

Za3tar,
these are of the lamest excuses I have ever heard. Kenya has its own problems (61 medals) Kazakhstan did not even exist 20 years ago (26 medals) Cuba is under sever economic conditions (170medals) Ethiopia and its recurring famine (31medals)

Well, to run the mile race, you don't need equipment and facilities. you just run. There isn't enough drive or self-motivated individuals in the Arab world to warrant a change of this direction.

and, to be in an athletically able position you would need to be no more than 30 in age (in most cases) and I don't remember a war plaguing all Arab countries at the same time in the last 30 years.

Garfan,
You consider war, political turmoil, and economic hardships "lame excuses" ?!! I think my friend you have been in the US for too long :-)

The fact is that most of the Arab nations have not been stable for a very long time. The instability is what make it hard to building top-tier olympic teams.

Also for the other countries, do not neglect the fact that many of their players play outside their country most of the time and only play under the name of their country during the olympics. This is not the case for everybody, but is for many in Cuba for example.

I am not saying that we have great olympic programs, and i am not saying that sports ministry are doing their job 100% .. but come on, no need for Arab self-hate in everything ;-p

Za3tar,
I am not self-hating. It is merely evil advocacy. Arab countries, such as Saudi Arabia, have been politically Stable for almost a Century with all the money in the world. Yet, they fail to win more Medals than Haiti: a country with extreme economic issues and omnipresent political turmoil.

I might have lived in the US for a little too long, but I won't sympathize with mediocrity.

Garfan,
Yeah, I agree with you that our governments and olympic teams should work harder. .. but i am still optimistic that things will get better.

I meant Devil up there.

Za3tar,
being optimistic is good. But as they say:
El 9aber mufat7 alqaber.
